20 Yard Dumpster Rental
If one container size could be called the default, this is it. Three very common projects land inside it with little room to spare and none wasted.
20 Yard Dumpster RentalA ten yard container runs out of space on mixed material long before it runs out of weight allowance. A twenty yard container has a larger footprint than some drives and yards can accommodate comfortably. The fifteen sits in that gap, offering half as much capacity again as the smallest size while keeping a footprint that still fits most residential and small commercial positions without dominating them.
The projects it suits tend to have a mixed weight profile. A bathroom and a bedroom together, a small roof with the associated timber, a workshop clearance with some heavy items among the general material, or a garden project combining vegetation with a modest quantity of hardcore. In each case a ten yard would need a swap and a twenty would travel with capacity unused.
The comparison that matters is not the price difference between the two sizes. It is the price of the larger container against the cost of a swap out, which includes a second vehicle visit and a pause in the work while it happens. If there is a realistic chance the smaller container fills before the job finishes, the larger one is usually cheaper once that pause is priced honestly.
Where the material is dense, the calculation inverts entirely. Additional volume is of no use if the weight limit arrives first, and paying for capacity that cannot legally be filled is straightforwardly wasteful. For hardcore, tile and soil the recommendation stays at the small end regardless of how much material there is, with more frequent movements instead of a bigger box.
A fifteen yard container is noticeably longer than a ten but still within reach of most driveway placements. The practical test is whether there is clear length for the vehicle to position and tip, not simply whether the container itself would fit once it is down. Delivery needs meaningfully more room than the static footprint suggests, which is the single most common reason a placement that looked viable turns out not to be.
For premises and properties across Edwardsville, IL with a yard rather than a drive, this size often works well as a standing container. It holds enough that collection frequency stays sensible, without occupying the space required for deliveries and vehicle movements. Where it genuinely will not fit, stepping down and collecting more often is nearly always better than forcing a larger box into a position that constrains the operation.
If the project genuinely could go either way, the useful question to ask dispatch is what the swap costs. Knowing that figure converts an uncertain sizing decision into a straightforward comparison, and it removes the anxiety of ordering small. Plenty of customers deliberately order the smaller container knowing a swap is priced and available if the work grows.
